Will increased DVR use cut into TV advertising revenue?

I use my DVR frequently.  Almost everything that I watch on TV is recorded. I will be honest I don’t like commercials. With that said I completely agree with Ted Herbert when he spoke out against skipping through commercials.

The DVR is bad for the commercial industry and the companies that use commercials. Though not all that much different than before the DVR. Before the DVR people used to talk, use the restroom, and make popcorn during the commercials, now people just fast-forward through them.

I am not sure what can be done to save the commercial industry. People don’t usually like watching commercials unless it’s during the Super Bowl. People usually fast-forward through the commercials, talk, or go do something else. Commercials have gotten a lot more interesting in the one to two years. I sometimes find myself stopping while fast-forwarding and rewind to watch a commercial that seems interesting. Commercials have caused me to watch a new show or buy a new product before. So commercials are still affective. They just aren’t quite as effective as they used to be before the DVR was invented. I now see a lot of products being advertised to TV shows. A few years ago Kyle XY advertised Sour Patch Kids, Kyle XY being one of my favorite TV shows I went out and bought Sour Patch Kids.

All in all I believe that the DVR does more good than harm. It helps out the television industry because people can watch their favorite shows whenever they choose to and people spend more money on cable, Pay Per view, DVRs, and better TVs. It harms the commercial industry and companies because people don’t have to watch commercials anymore and most choose not to watch them.

I think that companies should start advertising on TV shows. Because people still watch them. Companies need to do what Sour Patch Kids did. Have a character drink a Pepsi or eat a Snickers bar or shop at Walmart.

Dad is turning 50

Dad is about to turn 50. I was at his house this weekend. He let me put 50 candles on his birthday cake that I made him.
